The normal range is 22-28mpg depending on the type of driving (city/highway) and how hard you drive it. I average 26mpg but have gotten as high as 29.5mpg on highway trips, although my vehicle is definitely not stock since it has several modifications that alter fuel economy. Anyone that claims to average more than 30mpg in a 300D/CD/TD/SD (especially on eBay and craigslist) either has math errors or is a liar.

I have a 1991 300D. I do mostly highway. I get from 30.5 mpg (driving 75-80 mph) to 33.5 mpg (driving 55-60 mph). It has been that way for the 220,000 miles I have driven it (it currently has about 350k). Very consistent on mpg --- I almost always get 31.5 --- I am typically driving about 65-70 mph. By the way this is in hilly, mountainous areas.
