190D transmission parts interchange question - 3/28/2008 8:10:30 PM

Hi,
I'm a newbie on this forum. I've been interested in buying a Mercedes diesel so that I can run biodiesel and possibly WVO, and go on some long trips with it this summer, towing my racebike. I've decided that a 190D would fit my needs best, and there is one for sale for $400 here in my town. One of the guys who works for my local mechanic has it parked behind his shop. It has no dents, no rust, and just about everything works except for a couple of the window switches and a door lock; and the interior is in good shape. It has about 205k miles, the engine runs well, but the (auto) transmission does not go into gear. They tell me that the transmission needs to be either rebuilt or replaced. So I wonder whether I should buy it and replace the transmission. There is a junkyard about 100 miles from here that has a transmission from a later 190E. Will a transmission from any 190 bolt up to the 190D? Are there other transmissions that are interchangeable, as well?

Best regards,

Jeff Nelson

You should use the tranny from another 190D with the same engine as it.

Also, WVO is illegal to use on public roads.

The gasser tranny is a 722.40x while the diesel is a 722.41x, except for the 190D 2.2 which is a 722.403.

They have different modulator and pressure settings.

so, is it correct to think that a gas-190 trans. will bolt-up, but need modulator & pressure adjusted?.....jerry, (my 190d, '87, 2.5, 722.414,- needs another trans.) I'm not limited to just a 190d trans.?
