Won't start!!

treadstone71 -> Won't start!! (2/16/2008 6:35:41 AM)

I haven't had a chance to drive my 190 D in a while.  This morning when I went to start it, it was almost dead.  I gave it a few trys but nothing.  I then tried to jump it but the jump didn't do anything.  Before I go out and buy a new battery I thought I should just ask if there is something I'm missing.  I will check the battery of course (with a voltmeter) to see if its still good.  I just thought it odd that the jump didn't give it any juice.

What would happen if I took the battery from my Ford Ranger and put it in the Benz.  Is this a bad practice?

It must have been a bad ground when I tried to jump.  Startup ok.

Something expensive regulating the power gets fried probably. lol

Make your startup life easy by buying new Bosch glowplugs. I can help you on the install if you want to meet me half way somewhere between MD and VA

I was able to start her up but couldn't restart a few hours later.  If it is my alternator how expensive is a new one.  I know for my ford its dirt cheap.  Something tells me for a MB its going to be a lot.

What makes you believe it's your alternator?

   If you haven't, I would get the car started again with a jump- and while its running take your voltmeter and check the voltage across the battery terminals, it should read over 12 volts, my 300sd read ~14.1v, I believe if you are seeing this that means the alternator is working fine.        If you charge the battery and it wont stay charged, then my experience is you need a new one.  This whole ordeal just happened to me with my car and the new battery fixed it

I've had vaccum issues and the car will not turn off with the key.  Several times I turned off the ignition and the car was still running.  Thought that might burn out my alternator.  Haven't had a chance to check yet.
