Any OM61x will bolt up to the manual transmissions used on the 240D, euro 300D and 280E/TE. The transmissions from the 230 and 250 models will not.

If you want fuel economy, horsepower, and drivability then you should look for a 98-99 E300 or 05-06 E320 CDI.

For a stock W140, the S320 or S600 g@ssers. For an engine swap, get an S350 with a bad 3.5 and swap in a 3.0L from a 300SDL.

Compared to the 3.5L? It would have less torque off the line but the overall power is the same.

An engine swap is never easy. The W140 has lots of tubes and wires compared to the older models, if you are doubtful that you can do it you should check a few independent MB mechanics and see what they would charge for the job. Paying somebody to do it for you may be worth the cost to avoid the hassle and aggravation that usually accompanies large repair jobs like that.
