Both rear springs broke at the bottom on my 2001 C240 with 102,000 miles.  I don't overload it.  I believe it's due to the brine on the NE roads in winter.  I just replaced both rear springs with MB OEM springs.  There is a serious clunk when I go over bumps now.  It's related to the springs.  I did not replace the upper spring rubber shims.  I am going to the dealership to get them now and do the job again.  I am able to use a friends lift.  I removed the lower shock bolt and the bolt near the differential on the lower control arm.  I am supporting this arm using a transmission jack.  I lower the jack and replace the spring then lift the arm back into place and reinstall the bolts.  Any other suggestions would greatly be appreciated.  I appreciate the DIY information I have gotten off the website.  You, the readers, have a considerable amount of knowledge and experince.
I've had Saabs for up 13 years and over 250,000 miles and I have not needed to replace as many parts as this MB.  Just a clutch assembly, fuel pump, and a couple of water pumps on the old Saabs.  I have since learned not to run the fuel tank so low as to damage the pump.  I've done normal wear and tear plus a winshield wiper motor and front end suspension also on this MB.  From what I read I guess I'm still lucky.  I still love the way it drives.  I was thinking of a new E diesel or the new C diesel coming out but I think I will really check out Saab and BMW this time.

Thanks,
Bill
