I think it is simple to do with a wire or paperclip on the earlier R129s.  Search the SL Forum posts of this site for the answer.  Good luck.

I noticed that my car is a california car....and it has a button that when pushed flased the led 16 times......if that is the true trouble code it says that the exhaust gas recyle valve is shorted....but I can't locate the valve....do you know where it is?

Thanks for your reply.

YOu can use the button to find the trouble code, and you can erase it with the button too. Hold it on for 2 seconds. Go through the DTC's and when you get the same one again, then hold the button down for 4 seconds, and go through each one until it flashes just once.
Here's a web site to go to and check the Sticky's.

Russ. Had you clicked on the hyperlink, you would have seen the Sticky's. They are articles that can't be erased, and have answers to many questions.
In additon, that web site is really terrific. Make up a name and password. I have a '94 and made up a DTC tool from Radio Shack. On your car, I believe you can get the codes from that little button on the right side of the car near the firewall. Check out the Sticky's.
By the way I'm in Bellmore.

Put your car year down, so one could answer your questions more exactly. On my car, a '94 you have to have a code reader, or make one up for a few bucks. Near the firewall on the passenger side there is a round cap. Unscrew it and you'll find a plug. Check the Sticky's on  for checking the DTC's.and making a code reader. YOU'll http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129-sl-class/  also find the trouble code numbers too.

I drive a 1998 my father has a 1999 and my secretary has a 1992.  We are stuck on the 129's.  The best value for dollar of any vehicle.

All cars '96' and above are OBD ll compliant. On these cars you would need an OBD ll reader, which I believe plug into a plug near the gas pedal, and are digital. They are not that expensive to buy.

The cars earlier than '96 ' are OBD l. These are analog and digital.
