Hello everyone,

What an amazing site this is. This is our first MB and I was blown away when I found this forum.

We just took delivery of a 1979 300SD (bio/veggie conversion) and it arrived without an air filter or housing. When I asked if it was left off by mistake, I was told that this model had an issue with the intake being a "poor design and rattling" and that the filter was "not needed unless you drive on gravel roads". I know a Mercedes is an amazing vehicle, but this just doesn't seem right. General particulate matter would end up inside the engine, which I have a hard time believing  would not cause serious problems down the road.

Is there anyone out there who can clear this up? Has anyone heard of this year & model having a "misengineered" air filter or anything like that?

I appreciate your help,

imcgarvie

An air filter is ALWAYS required on ANY engine. If at all possible you should refuse the car, send it back and get back every penny you spent on it. Who knows how long the filter has been left off and what damage may have already been done.

That thing has "problems" written all over it from the "conversion" and lack of air filter. It's obvious the seller has no clue what he is doing and is dumping his problems (car) on anyone unfortunate enough to buy it.

These cars were never made to use vegetable oil. People selling their cars with "conversions" installed either are having problems and passing them onto somebody else or taking advantage of naive people looking to hop blindfolded into the crazy VO fad.

Hello Lance,
Thank you for your e-mail concerning using waste vegetable oil or straight vegetable oil as a fuel to power your diesel vehicle. Waste vegetable oil or straight vegetable oil cannot legally be used in vehicles. Raw vegetable oil or recycled greases (also called waste cooking oil) that have not been processed into esters are not biodiesel, and are not registered by EPA for legal use in vehicles. In addition, vehicles converted to use these oils would likely need to be certified by the EPA; to date EPA has not certified any conversions. These conversions may also violate the terms of the vehicle warranty. For more information on the certification process, please visit EPA's Web site at: www.epa.gov/otaq/cert/dearmfr/cisd0602.pdf

Biodiesel (for example B20) is a great fueling option. You can find information on biodiesel at our website: http://www.epa.gov/smartway/growandgo/documents/factsheet-biodiesel.htm

Also, please find below a link to biodiesel.org and a fact sheet on the difference between biodiesel and vegetable oil. Using straight vegetable oil in your vehicle can harm your vehicle and negate your vehicle warranty.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to give me a call at 303-312-6757.
