is there anyway to increase the horsepower levels on a 82 616? ive been tinkering with the vehicle for about 2 years now and finally have some things modified to increase the acceleration, i live in a very fast paced town, so i would enjoy the additional power from my 240 so that i can halfway keep up with traffic.

as it stands, im in the process of getting an air switcher for the transmission, an addition of a high and low on the output shaft, so that instead of the 4 speed, 8. the same shop wants to do a complete teardown and rebuild of the motor, then put some serious boost, looking at probably a 90 trim turbo...aiming high, also, would it be more beneficial to have propane injection or water injection, something along those lines?

my final goal for the vehicle is to be pushing about 323 horsepower on a 616 motor. not alot, until you consider what motor its on.

any help is greatly appreciated when it comes to this.



i found out that i can put a gt28r on my 616 after i do an engine rebuild and what not...something like ummm 25psi, ya think that will help with my power problems????
already planning on doing extra injectors through the intake. so yeah...
good idea or bad??? anyone?

I can tell you know squat about diesels, especially MB diesels, given what you have posted. You are thinking as if this is a gas engine.

Lets clear things up a little first- There is no such thing as a "90 trim" turbo.
There is very little space in the transmission tunnel so I don't see HOW or even why you would want to make it an 8 speed.
Rebuilding the engine is pointless when there are no parts to "build up" the engine.
Propane is extremely overrated and does very little for an IDI engine, same with water injection.
323hp IS alot FAR more than the engine can physically handle.
A GT28 would be laggy as hell on a 616, a KKK K04 or Garrett T25 is a better match.
25psi is an absolutely pointless guessing figure. You need to get the engine running and figure out how much boost you NEED to burn the amount of fuel injected.
It is pointless to think about "add extra injectors" through the intake as there is nothing that can be injected because of the way diesels operate.

Reality check: You can dump a boat load of cash into an IDI MB diesel and you will still get smoked by most any modern 100% stock car/pickup with a V6 or V8. If you want power, drop in a 350 SBC. A 616 is not physically capable of making more than 120hp for more than a few seconds. It is not built to handle the added stresses of a turbo.

The best thing to do if you want to keep the car is to junk that 616 and completely forget about it- Find a 617a and drop it in the 616's place. That will get you about 2x the power right off the bat, you can get about 175hp out of it reliably for a daily driver or about 300hp (after about $8,000 in parts and LOTS of fabrication) but it will be just a drag strip queen as it can't handle that much power for long.

What it boils down to: Old MB diesels are about the worst possible vehicles you can choose for high performance.
