The Lexus garage I bought the car from will pay to have the cluster changed in the 2001 E320 4 Matic (84500km) I just bought. They scheduled a rendez vous Monnday AM at an independent Mercedes/BMW garage for the replacement of the cluster. I asked about the KM on the car and I was told the display would start at 0000 KM but my invoice from this garage would be the certification of the KM of the car. 1) If they are independent and not hooked up on the Mercedes computer system will this cause any problem with the car or the electronics (computer system of the car). After the cluster installation I will be going to Mercedes to buy a second key (because the second key is defective). They told me to go get my second key after the cluster has been changed because changing the cluster could affect the programming of the second key. Thank-You.

The new instrument pack has to be coded to the car. This process invites that the mileage is made continuous with the previous pack. i.e. it requests that the old mileage is entered. Fitting a new pack will not work without coding the pack for mileage tampering reasons. This job can only be done by MB dealer except for some garages which have invested in specialist equipment. Not sure that your Lexus garage garage have researched the process correctly BUT the States is somewhat different to the UK where car crime is very extensive. Stuart.

I am from Canada. The place they have referred me to is in Montreal and has been in business many years specialising in Mercedes/BMW as an independent. Before buying the car it was send there by the Lexus dealer for a B tuneup and also because SRS was displayed in in the cluster and they changed a sensor in the car. They seem like a professional place. I just want to be sure I won't have trouble getting my second key and that all is done the way it should be. The Lexus dealer is paying the bill they probably have an arrangement with this garage. It is the first time I buy this type of car and I know it is different than my PT Cruiser the way it is worked on. I just don't want any costly surprises after my 1 month warranty.

They will code the key to the cars vin number no problem for a shop with the proper machine, the cluster will work fine, used clusters are installed all the time and they work,by law you need to record the miles stated and why the change. The dealer will be able to transfer your old mileage to the new unit.Make sure all the work they promise you is done before you drive it off the lot.

The Mercedes dealer here in my city told me on an E320 2001 when the cluster was changed that the milage would start at 0000 KM and I would have the old milage written on the invoice of the independant BMW/Mercedes garage.

I got the new cluster installed yesterday at the dealer. They said for the E series 2001 and the CLK series there is no way of putting back the same milage. It now starts at 0000 KM.
