I have a W123 300d (also have a W124 300d) and last night while on the motorway, big noise from under the car, seems like it is comming right from below the little compatment between the front seats, just a bit to the back of where the Hazard flasher switch is. I haven't investigated properly, but will be scouting about tonight under the car. Now my question..... will any of the W123 4speed gearboxes fit onto the W123 300d engine, because to repair if it is the gearbox, will be a lot of money, and just going to the scrapyard and taking one off a vehicle will work out loads cheaper.... Maybe it is the centre bearing that has gone, will have a good look tonight...

It will cost much more to install a manual box unless you do all the work yourself and have good fabrication and welding skills. The sound most likely means you need a new flexdisk. Replace them both at the same time, one on the transmission end and one on the differential end.

Thanks for the reply, looked at the flexdisks and they were ok, took the lead light and got a bit further back, right by the centre bearing on the engine side of the centre bearing, there is a rubber dust cover that goes onto the gearbox and also on the shaft, hard to describe it ant better, but this had come off and was spinning round like mad. Looks like with age it had come adrift and was hitting the body work underneath, very much like kids putting a piece of cardboard or plastic on their bikes to run on the spokes as they ride, just yanked the thing off and the sound was gone, was I pleased!!!! Hard to believe that it could have made so much noise.
