ok so im probally going to be changing jobs in the very near future. im probally going to have a 60-70 mile RT commute every day. so I was thinking that a diesel powered car would be great for this, good milage. also I like fast cars, I was looking at MB diesels for their milage and relaiablilty. also theyve been around forever so you can find them at good prices. Ive done tons of research on diesel pickups and and familiar with the power they are capable of, but one would my be pratical for my as they average 18-20 mpg, great for a pickup yes, but would get very expensive for me. so it comes down to an MB or volvo diesel. the question is is there anybody bombing mb or volvo diesels here?? what kind of power are they capable of? how much would it cost. what does it take to reach 3-400hp?? ive seen the cars in finland and they have hit this mark, but there dosnt seem to be anything here anywhere near that. whats a realistic expectation for a MB diesel. thanks.

A proper engine rebuild costs $3000-5000. A modified injection pump to get more than 150hp costs $2500-3500 to get from Myna Diesel in Finland. Turbo and custom exhaust manifold to flow enough air is about $400-800 An intercooler big enough is about $150-400 Transmission modification/rebuild to handle 300+HP is about $1500-2500 A realistic expectation for a pre-1987 MB diesel without spending a five figure sum is 135-180HP. Basically, if you want power out of MB's 1982-1987 diesels, take most of what you know about the pickup diesels and forget it.

I figured it would be somewhat simmilar to a mechanical 12v cummins. you mention pre 87 cars, whats wrong with the newer cars?? 90-99?? although realisticaly for me it would probally be probally 90-93 or so, I really like the 98s, but there a little out of my budget.

There are no turbodiesels before 1978. 1978-1981 300SD is the first turbodiesel, 1978-1979 had a weak transmission and a lower power engine. 1982-1985 300D/CD/TD/SD are vastly more common than any other model. Decent potential but take alot of effort to extract any power. 1987 only had the 300SDL, 300D and 190D 2.5T. Excellent power potential, the best choices. The 1991-1995 S-class diesels (300SDL, 350SDL, 300SD and 350SD) have a major internal design flaw that makes them very weak. 1990-1993 had the 300D 2.5T. Same body as the 87 300D with the engine of the 2.5L 190D. Decent power potential but electronics get in the way. 1995-1997 E300 was non-turbo and can't handle the stress of a turbo. 1998-1999 E300 is very good potential but littered with restrictive electronics. 2005-2006 E320 is the inline-6 CDI. 2007-2008 is the V6 CDI. These engines are very little like the 12V Cummins. They are all overhead cam, indirect injection (Except the CDI's) with a short piston stroke and high-RPM's. None are intercooled except for the 1998+ models.
