Guys, as you may recall, I recently acquired my 87 300SDL, with 86K miles.  There are two things I need help with please:

1. What is the engine temp supposed to stay at. I drove the car on the highway today, and had the A/C on and it ran pretty high to about 108C, which worries me...with the A/C off, it stays just under 100C. I know that if this car overheats, there are big problems with the head cracking......any thoughts. Maybe this is normal, and I am overly paranoid.

2. The car runs beautifully, has great pickup and great highway cruising.....I MEAN GREAT. This car is far superior to the 84 300SD I had in terms of pickup and performance. HOWEVER, after getting off the highway and perhaps coming to a stop or red light at the ramp, the car will just shut off, when idling for a minute....this is quite strange....I also noticed that it idles at 5RPM, which seems low, compared to my 300SD, which idled at 7-8RPM....Thoughts?

As a side note, I am so surprised how quick the car is and the fuel economy is not bad...I got 300 highway miles on 1/2 tank today.....

Thoughs Guys on the 2 questions?

Tom

I had a similar problem with my '97 E300D--frequent overheating, i.e., 100+C instead of the typical 85-90-ish. It was NOT the thermostat and turned out to be a fan that had to be replaced.

Thanks. I know the fan is useful only at low speeds....But I even have the problem at high speeds.....

What is considered overheating on the 300SDL?  In other words, how hot is too hot?  I was driving on a hot and humid day in traffic the other day in Dallas and the temp needle was sitting between the half way mark and the "all the way too hot" mark...it concerned me but never got any hotter.

Well, it was slightly above the 100C mark, probably around 105 - 107.
In my book, that is pretty hot, I dont like to run em that hot.

Hi

My 84 300SD dose the samething overheating i would suggest to take that thermostat out for the summer time and replace it back in when winter time comes around  I hope this helps.

THX

Thermostat is an easy replacement. Lucky it's not a fan clutch or radiator. lol

AMG, they called me and told me the fan clutch needs to be fixed as well.....Since I am doing this, I am going to give you guys a heads up about what is getting fixed and what its going to cost:

1. Drivers side window motor and regulator
2. Glow plug is out and needs to be replaced
3. Fan clutch and coolant thermostat
4. Sunroof motor needs replacing
5. Brake pads on all 4 wheels
6. Radio repair

Grand Total: 3,500-

Unbelievable, but, its for my baby, so I dont mind taking care of her.
Tom

Damn i would have done it for 2k i had an 86 300sdl and all that stuff is easy! Glow plugs are simple to replace, radio depending on problem, brake pads on these cars are the easyest of any car i have ever seen u dont have to take the caliper off!!!

Sun roof and window take it to an upolstry shop less cost and they normally do a much better job than dealers or regular shops sorry i didnt see this sooner!

BTW i have a oil filter leftover from when i had my sdl send me a PM if u want to buy it its a Hengst filter not some cheap autozone brand
