Hi, new member here. Just purchased a 1994 sl500. My tape cassette use is almost zero. In the console of the car exists the cassette storage/dispenser. Can this be removed and replaced with something else? Thank you for having this forum.

Hey New member also. Just purchased '91 500SL. I was given (was laying in the trunk) the tape box with the lighter compartment. In its place was a nice storage compartment. So it can be removed somehow. Hope this helps. See ya.

I removed mine. It was a real bugger to get out. I removed only the tape holder so the lighter is still there. There's an easy way to remove it I'm sure but I used the 400-pound-gorilla technique because I knew it wouldn't be going back in. I haven't replaced it with anything yet. It's very ugly ... but roomy. Apparently a replacement compartment can be purchased somewhere? I was planning to to put some felt-covered panels in there to dress it up a bit. Maybe I'll shop around for an insert instead.

I just replaced mine with a felt-linded console that I got from Driver's corner. They also have a cupholder insert, albiet at a Mercedes price. The site is: http://www.thedriverscorner.com/sl129cupholder.htm. To get the casette unit out I had to smash it and remove it in pieces. That' seemed a lot easier than taking the entire console apart and the holder was useless anyhow.
