hey everyone. i am 18 yrs old and i just bought a 1986 Mercedes Benz 190 E Class as my first car. it as approx 160,000 miles on it. i am very excited! my parents both have American cars, a 2001 Chrystler Sebring and a 1999 Cadillac Deville. i think foreign cars are a lot better, no? anyways thats pretty much it for now. i hope to save up enough money and upgrade to at least a 1995 E Class during the Spring.

When I was 18, I saved money from a parttime job for 2 years and bought a 59 MGA, what a mechanical nightmare, but it was so much fun to drive. German cars are well engineered, however you do have a lot of mileage on the car you bought. Mercedes Benz parts and labor is quite high. Even if you had the car checked and it is in decent mechanical order. I would be prepared to spend some $$ in the future. If you didn't have it check by a competent Mercedes mechanic, I would do that soon, you don't want to break a timing belt, or some other important piece. I wish you the best of luck and enjoy your "first car." I remember being the happiest kid in town when I got my MGA. Boy it's great to be young! One other thing my first car made me a car nut for the rest of my life, it's a great hobby, expensive but great!

The engine was a 4 cylinder, I forget the displacement and HP, too long ago to remember. It was a rock solid power train, but the components were horrible, once the temps dropped to below 40 degrees, the engine usually wouldn't start, the car had a 12 volt system, but used 2 6 volt batteries under the back of the seat, they laid in a bracket with no weather protection, the side curtain and top leaked like crazy when it rained. But if had knock off wire wheels, which you had to tighten every couple of months, and paint after every winter and the suspension was so stiff, it would make you teeth chatter, but if handle great, and at 18 who cared about the other stuff! Yes the hood was very long and the trunk area short, and yes it did remind one of the early Vette's, which I owned two of, also Austin Healy's a Morgan, an 409 Chevy, a couple of Mustangs 5.0's then in the 80's I went back to Euro cars, a Saab ( piece of junk) then Two Audi's, a BMW Z3, then my back went and now I have the Mercedes, which I must say is one if not the best car I've owned. My wife drives a 94 Audi 100 wagon with 107K, the original battery lasted 9 years and just within the last 5K miles we had to put about $4K into the car, not bad for 10 years of ownership.

The MG engine was made by British Motor Works and was used in many Brit cars until the late 70's I understand.
