My wife has one of those "not-so-sought-after" 1992 300sd turbos.  She loves it but is putting a quart of oil in it per week.  It smokes all the time.  Not a lot of power going up hills.  It does not leak oil and there is no water in the oil.  I have read about the amount of smoke may be caused by the turbocharger.  A little help on decideing what to replace?

High oil consumption in that engine means bent rods. Time to replace the engine.

I'm not joking, btw.

The engine runs perfectly smooth and makes absolutely no noise.  Would it still be bent rods?

Extreme oil consumption and low power in the 3.5L engine are the primary symptoms that give the engine it's Rod-Bender name.

The cheapest solution is to cut your losses and simply get rid of the car as quickly as you can. The next cheapest option is to swap in a used engine. The best, but most expensive, option if you really like the car is to replace the engine with a 3.0L engine from an 87 300D or 86-87 300SDL.
