Hello.  I have a couple questions.  I have been wanting to acquire a diesel sedan to be able to justify making my own Boi-D.  I currently own a '96 Ford Powerstroke so I am not new to diesel's in general just mercedes.  I am looking at a car and need to know what to look for as a pre-purchase inspection.  This is what I know so far.

188k miles
Needs headgasket.
Needs ECU (it is "missing")
Needs seat switches

I called a couple places around town on the head gasket and received quotes from $500 (retired MB mechanic) to $3000 which includes machining the heads, valves, and some other stuff.  What should I be concerned about with this vehicle.  The reason for purchase is a new job that is 50 miles from my house.  So I need reliable transportation that gets better mileage than my 4 ton beast.  Can this vehicle be turned into a reliable daily driver? Or should I pass on it and wait for a good deal?

Appreciate any and all information

Sam

I am also in Denver Colorado.  Anyone know of a good mechanic around here?  Or better yet are you one?
