Sorry guys I am new to my C230 and Mercedes and I will have some simple stupid questions.  I do however thank all who help me out.

I was reading in my owners manual for a 98 C230 that they do not recommend using any device that has it’s own antenna like a cell phone for the cars electronics.  As this is a 98 car are the newer cell phones any better or should this be avoided?

Hi there,

I had a Nokia cellphone fitted to my 98 C200 the day it came out of the dealer. Only problem was that they had to drill a hole in the roof to make good grounding/shielding for the aerial.

This has been in use no probs ever since with Nokia phones and checked by the dealr after I developed a totally unrelated radio problem.

So - use a hard fitted and drilled aerial mount and a very reputable fitter as I also have heard rumours that badly fitted kits can interfere with the car electronics.

Mike

If you are simply using the phone, without trying to integrate with the radio and the internal antenna the answer, per my dealer is no problem. I am guessing that older phones may have caused problems with the multiple on board computers. But that is just a guess. I use a Sony Ericsson GSM cell phone and it does mess with the radio when it rings but nothing more than a buzz thru the speakers. I have had no other problems. It does the same thing to the TV in the house.
