Hi, I just purchased a 2003 CL 500 and noticed that the fuel door will not stay closed.  I can hear the mechanism clicking but it does not hold it shut.  I called mercedes parts and they have no idea what the fix is.  Any advice?
Thanks
Anthony

try moving the cord that is attached to the cap and the car and move it to a differnt position then try closing the gas door.

It is not the cap that is the problem.  The door will close but it does not stay closed.  If i hold it down and lock the doors it will lock in place.  It seems that when you open and close it there is a magnet (best way to describe it is how an entertainment centers glass doors open and close) and it does not hold it shut.  The mechanism does go up and down, I am not sure I am making sense.

hello Yes i know exactly what you mean about the door not closing and i know you dont mean the gas cap, you mean the gas door. i have seen this and SOMETIMES it is the cable attached to the cap that actually gets in the way of the door closing fully. i just suggested to try to just move the cable around the cap to see if maybe the door will close so the cable is not in the hinge of the gas door which can keep it from closing fully to latch.

Hello I looked at a CL today and the mechanism is pretty simple, if the gas door is shut properly as designed you can still pull the door open eventhough it is shut...not locked but shut. there is no magnet to keep door down its just spring pressure. if that button works and you can push it in and then push it again and it pops out all components are working as designed.

The gas door may have been obstruct by a cable attached on the cap, that is why it could not be closed. On the other hand, improper fitting of Mercedes Benz fuel  tank cap may cause difficulty in shutting the fuel door.My vehicle's fuel door is designed spring pressure,if its like yours you can try pushing it gently.
