I just bought another 1984 500SEL in need of some time and attention, but I will need to tow it approximately 200 miles to my shop. I was going to tow dolly it with the rear two tires on the ground. I have done this before for short distances with no problem, but the gentleman I'm buying the car from states I need to disconnect the driveshaft first. I didnt think this was a problem with these cars, but Im willing to listen to people smarter than me, so lets see what the forum has to say. And again, thanks people in advance for all your help and information

I think it is because its a rear wheel driver car, maybe when the rear wheels are following, the driveshaft is moving, so disconnecting it might stop it from wearing or breaking. I don''t exactly know but thats what i think it is.
