question on fuel grades

I am new to the diesel realm. Does anyone know why the latest offerings only run on B5 and not B100 fuel grades? Does anyone know when Mercedes plans on being able to run on B100?

Is there anything that can be done to a CDI/Bluetec that will enable it to run on B100 and still be covered under warranty?

regulated emissions

unburnt hydro carbons  b100 -67% b20 -20%

carbon monoxide         b100 -48%  b20 -12%   

particulate                    b100 -47%   b20  -12%

NoX                            b 100 +10%  b20 +2%

as you can see when running on bio fuels NoX is increased. this is also the main emission that keeps them from being 50 state legal. so as you can see running b5 is a small  enough increase to pass but running on b20 or b100 you would be outside the emissions regulations and the onboard emissions control system would likely put you into limp home mode.


so the simple answer if no, unless you have the ability and the budget for extensive emissions research and development. my 2 cents go get a w115 or a w123 and run all the bio fuels you want after replacing the few b20+ sensitive fuel lines.

The question I have is what vehicle are they using? Are they testing this using the latest diesel engine technology that Mercedes is using? CDI/Bluetec? Tests are run to show whatever they want, so they don't explain exactly what engine is being used. I would think that would be imporant.

I don't think the engine much matters.  Any modern production turbodiesel with direct injection will be running at an efficiency that will yield similar test results to those listed above.

Nothing at all can be done. If you put Biodiesel higher than B5 or any kind of WVO/SVO at all, MB will void the fuel system warranty and possibly the engine warranty if they detect it.

It's part of the warranty contract signed when you buy the car. If you violate it, they will void it.

I know about the warranty issue. It's too bad that they can't bring in the CDI/Bluetec in California and run B5. It would be great to have the hybrid versions brought in. I know they were working on them a few years ago.

I have read that B10 and higher has various grades of quality, is this part of the reason why MB won't warrant higher than B5?

Is there any development from MB for a engine that run B100 in the near future?

They can run B100 right now, MB just won't let owners do it.

The reason is because there are no mandatory quality standards set by the government for biodiesel. There are suggested standards, but they don't have to be met in order to sell the fuel.

If there aren't any standards, does that mean that there is varying quaities of B100?

Yes.

Before you buy B100, make sure it's got up to date ASTM D6751 tests.
