1998 E300TD Automatic has intermittent starting problem. Mercedes think it may be the electronic control unit (ECU).
Have new batteries in keys. Further intermittent problem in auto box gear selection; When pulling away, sometimes doesn't want to go from 1st to 2nd gear until I select 4th, then goes through the gears as normal. Are these problems somehow linked via the ECU, how much is a new one? Any other suggestions?

The starting problem happens about once every 5 attempts. I've tried moving the auto gear selector into neutral - sometimes works but not always.
The gear change from 1st only happens about once a week. The revs will go through the roof if I let them. If I knock the gear lever across into 4th, the box moves up through the gears as normal.

now this makes me think of gear recognition switch. it is inside the shift lever.

this can cause starter problem if it sends the wrong signal that the gear is not in "P" or "N", and prevent the starting.

you also got problem on shifting which could be cause by the same wrong signal.

ask the mechanic to check the actual values, and do basic checks on voltage, signals, resistance and continuity. only by this way that the problem could pinpointed.
