I was given a black 1983 300D with a shot transmission. The previous owner said it (the trans) would slip but once it was moving, it was fine. Now it won't engage in any gear. I've crawled around underneath and as far as I can tell the linkage is still good. I can move the shifter thru all positions and not engage a thing. Now I can't even get the dang thing to start. Long story short, I was wondering if it is even worth it to rebuild the engine and transmission or just part it out. The interior is in great condition and the paint just needs to be buffed out to make it beautiful again. I would love to get this thing running again and use it as my main mode of transportation, but I'm just worried about getting stuck being dependant on another money pit. I've done that once and will never do it again. I realize that there alot of variables in that equation but I'm trying to figure out if I should fix it or just part it out. Anyway, if anyone has had any experience with a 1983 300D, just let me know.

But if you are not willing or able to do 90% of the work then, IMHO, it's time to cut bait and sell it.... If the body and interior are in good condition, clean it up and you'll find someone willing to give you at least $400. for it. You can then find the vehicle of your choice by advertizing in your local paper for a MB diesel. The easiest to work on and most reliable are the 123's... particularly those built between 1982 and 1985. You'll get a lot of nibbles, but you should be able to buy a cream puff for between $2000. to $3000.
