Delership just quoted me about $500 each for front and rear breaks (total $1000). Car has 37K miles and the rear break pads were replaced at 18K miles. They say they should last about 18K miles. Sounds fishy??

My rear pads only lasted 15,000 on my 00 ML430.   I needed both rotors and Pads for a cost of $538. I couldn't believe it!!!


 When I complained, I was told that I was lucky (service manager claimed he only gets about 12,000 miiles)  It was furthur explained to me that all sophisticated users know that you only get about 12k to 15K miles on a set of brakes.  I was also told that it is normal for the rear breaks to wear down to the metal without ever activating a sensor.  How convient since this means MB get to replace both rotors and pads. It should also be noted that the rears need replacing about twice as often as the fronts.

i have an Ml500 with just about 6000 miles on it and the the brake rotors all around look like they got 20,000 miles on it. this is just plain crazy that mercedes will not fix or recognize this as a problem. I understanf that supercars like the mclaren and such need clutches at 6000k but not brakes. An independent auto shop said they had seen more than 2 ML come in for brakes at almost the 10,000 mile mark. Anyone have luchk fighting the dealer on this issue?

Is ML500 having different brakes, than ML320?
On our ML320 I replaced the brakes at about 40,000 miles and could probably make 5000 more, before the worse pad would go down to the metal.
My friend bought the pads for me for $220 shop price. That is a step from about $50 for pads for old 300tdt, but what the $1000 estimate did include?

The most expensive set of ceramic pads on TireRack.com is only $90. Total time involved in a replacement is less than one hour for the average do it yourself weekend warrior. The prices you guys are being quoted for brake jobs are crazy! Another thing, I don't know what exactly the difference between the brakes on your 500's and what I have on my 03 350, but I just rolled on 35k miles this evening on my way to work and my pads still look fine. At least 2/3 of pad left front and rear.

[:'(]My breaks have been squeeking for a while, but I thought it was just dust or something, seeing as I too had only been driving my 2004 ML500 for 6000 miles. Turns out, the Rotors feel like a the grooves of a record only much more pronounced. I'm heading into my dealership this friday to get some answers, perhaps with this knowledge I've been armed with, I may persuade my dealer to get me a new set gratis. I'll come back with results in a few days.

My dealer replaced my front Pads and rotors under what they called a manufacturer's good will warrantee coverage. The rear breaks also need to be replaced, so I do have to go back, but after the precident they set, I think they have little choice than to replace my rear breaks for free. I get this desired effect, I printed out this discussion string and gave it to them along with the other night drop paperwork. They gave me no fuss! This was at HBL Motors in Tysons Corner, VA. They're good guys. I hope others can learn from this. Whatever problems this 2004 merc has, it does not compare to my 1999 ML320. What a F***ing lemon...

Damn. I only paid $100 for both front and rear pads. They are Mintex Red brake pads - almost no brake dust at all and stops better than the stock pads.
