Ok I want to complie a thread on the Diesel models to buy and those to avoid. I have a list at home of the egine codes and year ranges i will get later but for now i am just getting the models. Feel free to add any personal experience with these models positive or negitive to make people''s decisons on which model more informed. And try to keep it based on the diesel/engine aspect of the car more than other problems but list those also.

BUY LIST

240D non-turbo
300D non-turbo
300CD non-turbo
300TD non-turbo (were the T is desinating wagon)

81-85 300sd turbo
86-87 300sdl turbo

87 300d/300TD turbo (were the T is desinating wagon)

94-95 e300 non-turbo

96-97 e300 non-turbo
98-99 e300 turbo

84-85 190d 2.2 non-turbo
86-89 190d 2.5 non-turbo
87 190d 2.5 turbo

Avoid List

90-91 350sd/sdl turbo
92-95 300sd or S350 turbo

i know i am forgeting some please remind me

I have a 1994 S350 Turbo Diesel with 230,586 miles and it runs perfect. The Air is cold, starts right up with no smoke, runs great on the highway, Lot''s of room and above average condition. Only issue i have is slower being a diesel and also being a very heavy car with the small 3.5 TD. Great Car and should be taken off of your Avoid list unless you think my car is truely an exception to the rule for this model MB. Best of both world great gas mileage and luxury all in one!

One thing to keep in mind is how well it was maintained before you. Even the best motor can be costly with poor proir maitenance

The S350 still has the flawed 3.5L engine. That alone will always make the car earn its place on the avoid list.

I have a 1998 C250TD, has only 87,000km on the clock and is immaculate original. Have had it 3 years and am thinking that maybe I''ll unload it as it is kind of surplus to my needs. Any advice on the pros and cons with this vehicle would be much appreciated.

The only problem I have experienced is a mild vibration when pulling away from a dead stop under load. Funny thing is it does''nt do it if I turn right, only when i turn left or go straight ahead. Weird! Is also most pronounced when cold.

I have owned now three Mercedes (not many for my 45+ years of driving, but then the darn things never wear out...) and currently am driving a 99 300D (turbo). The turbocharger makes such a difference, I will never have another naturally aspirated diesel. The earlier cars are good cars but get the turbo...

I bought an 87 300D turbo with a cracked head for $500 bucks. I replaced the head with a used one, and I''d consider this car one of the best that I have ever had. It extemely reliable, it''s not as slow as many people say, and it''s built like a tank. It gets around 30 mpg on the highway too

I must not understand.  The buy list as all the non-turbo diesels.  Are you saying they are better than the turbo?  My opinion is that the non-turbo versions are so underpowered as to be practically dangerous.  I would not consider buying a non-turbo diesel.

The older ones (pre 85) are great cars all around.
