As I understand it, the 350 diesel of that time was basically the 6 cylinder 300 diesel upgraded wth a bigger cylinder bore. HOWEVER, the bottom end (crankshaft, etc.) was not upgraded as well. There were retrofit "kits" made available to upgrade the bottom end which reputedly addressed the problems with this engine. John

Well, I need some advise. I am thinking of buying a 1993 S300D ( om603 engine ) with a dead engine. It is not quite dead but is blowing white smoke, a cloud making machine literally. I believe it is a 'bend rod' problem. Shall I buy it and if it is cheap enough? It is in very good shape otherwise. I am a reasonable mechanic and can take the head and the pan off and replace the rod, rings etc. Replacing the engine is a possibilites but that is plan B. My plann is to convert it to run on WVO. I have done a 1983 300 Turbo Diesel with great success. I just want a more comfy MBZ which can give me 100,000 ( hopefully more ) miles to get my money worth. Would this adventure worth my money and sweat. I am planning of buying it for under < $3000. Thanks

Just bought an emmaculate 93 300SD. I know about the engine problems. This engine seems OK so far; but I used a quart of oil after 400-500 miles and the mileage seems to be 20 mpg tops. I would be interested in putting a new engine in as well eventually. Will the newer six cylinder fit?

Greetings, I am new to the MB Diesel World. I had a 1986 MB 300e gas powered wreck...drove like a champ, though it was thrashed. Now I am considering a 1987 300D with 212K, for under $4K. Pics look great, the owner says it drives well, has new brakes, tires, and new climate control. Any advice on what to check for/ask for before going forward with a purchase.....where can I find specs for this car? i.e., H.P. , Torque, gas mileage, etc. This appears to be on the "buy" list and I did read a quote that it is one of the stronger diesels....(why?/how?) Any tips from those of you have have cut yr teeth on MB Diesels would be much appreciated. -Syko.
