Early 1980s turbo charged diesels

I'm wondering about the same thing that 6Camaro9 asked about. I understand that all of the 1979 to 1985 diesels are very dependable, turbo included. Is there a reason to avoid the turbo charged engines of that era?

Looking at a 1983 240D non-turbo diesel...Is it any good? How much would you pay for one? Frame is in great condition..

I happend accross this thread and was wondering what to expect with a 1979 300sd with turbo, that I have bought?? it's been (supposedly) in california all it's life, and has under 89000 miles. This is my first Diesel car and I got it for the better fuel mileage compared to gas engines. I see there may be cold weather related issues with diesels? any way to avoid or remedy that? I'm waiting for this car to arrive here and will post back when it get's here. Thanks..

Well I just discovered today that my 190D has an engine block heater so if yours has that obviously it'll help. Just make sure all your glowplugs are running 100% before winter and your g.p. relay works. Diesel fuel tends to gel into a wax when it's colder out so additives help to eliminate that.

Yes, if you've got a spending limit. Without a turbo they're underpowered so more people look for turbo models. There's no reason to avoid them mechanically though.

We have had our 91 350sd for almost a year has 210k miles and still looks great and runs well we have had a few minor leaks and such but for now we like it. can anyone tell me why it is so rare?

What frame I thought they were uni-bodies???

Hi - My first post!  I am off to see a second owner 1978 300D with 210,000 miles tomorrow.  I will most likely buy it unless there is something obviously wrong. I am glad to see it's on the "buy" list. Any comments regarding specific problems with this particular year/model would be appreciated. Thanks!

New to MB, and diesels, but always wanted one...thought they were high priced....but I found an '85 300TD turbodiesel sedan, (california emissions package, 200,000 mi.) The turbo doesn't work, -no power to speak of at all on test drive. A/c not working, door locks/fuel door inop....No rust, good body/interior for the age.(What would you pay? He's asking 3700.) I want a daily driver I can put the family in, and for me to commute to work & back -(High mileage car)

The owner tells me I can get an '82-'85 non-california model manifolds, turbo and exhaust pipes for around $500 (parts) and take off the ca. stuff. Does anyone see any problems with this? You all seem very smart in this area....I'd sure appreciate anything you have to offer!

For that kind of money, RUN! away. Paid under 2 grand for a solid awsome running sedan. They're getting a little scarce due to the wvo thing but they're around.
