I have an A class 1998 1.6 semi automatic (with 38000 on the clock) that used to run great up until about a week ago and then without warning , suddenly started to run like an old dog , spluttering out black smoke and loss of power , until I changed the plugs (which where filthy) , oil and oil filter.

I have also sprayed the MAFS with carb cleaner.

It now runs smoothly enough when driving but it will only run idle for around 30 seconds before cutting out.

It also cuts out when stopped at lights etc.

Any ideas what to check and/or clean next ?

Hopefully you can help me out.

Regards
Scott

Has your air mass sensor been checked out?

you need to check the throttle actuator possible excissive carbon on it ,if you find carbon on it you need to clean it,and test it......if the air mass was faulty check engine light would have come on this models are sensitive....
