Hi would changing the oxygen sensor and not the catalytic convertor damage the new oxygen sensor?

precisely...different parts has each own function...and your about to change the oxygen sensor..well mercedes benz oxygen sensor  is installed somewhere in the exhaust system. it will either be at or near the catalytic converter. it will be the only thing screwed into the exhaust system with electrical wires. some models have four wires, and some older models have less. ..good luck.drive safely! :)

Use some kroil or other good penetrating oil to free up the o sensor they can get pretty much locked in from all the heat cool cycles and the oil will help you remove them much easier.It's a b when they get frozen in place....
