My 300E has been running very rough and stalling at idle, hesitating when accelerating, local non-mercedes garage says it's probably fuel pump and/or injectors. Local garage does the regular maintenance, but will not attempt this repair...therefore I shall not attempt it myself. I called the Dealership and they say about $1600 for the pump replacement !!!

Is this price in line? Will they say I also need injectors since they are original with 170K miles? How much will that be?

I love the car, but I hate spending $3000 to fix a 14 year old car that's probably worth about $3000...if I dont fix it, I probably can't sell if.

Any advice...help...moral support appreciated.

you should fill the fuel tank to the neck, as if it runs well after this then you know it is definitally a fuel problem.

The fuel pump is not hard to replace just very fiddly and time consuming so you could easily do it yourself. buy a owners workshop manual off the internet search for w124 300e. This will tell you exactly whats involved. check with mb if there is an overhaul kit for the pump if so buy this and repair the pump using the manual as a guide if this can be done. Otherwise go to a breakers yard and buy a second hand pump it will do the same job, and will save a few bob. if its any help i replaced the fuel hoses on my 200 only to find that this caused problems. the fuel wasnt pumping correctly so i fitted a non return valve on the inlet fuel line this solved the problem.

p.s the car is worth $5000 upwards depending on condition etc.

I have the pump new Bosch for $224.00 & the injectors new Bosch for $26.00, why spend $1600.00 at the dealer?
