I have always changed oil and filter every 5000 km (3000 mi). When I brought my 01 ML430 to the local dealer for an oil (synthetic) and filter, he informed me that these cars don't require this service that frequently. Apparently I should bring it in every 10,000 - 15,000 km; depending on the type of driving. Seems excessive. Any comments? Thanks Roman

Most new cars don't require oil change at every 3,000 miles now. (usually around 5,000 to 7,500 miles) I've only done the oil changes for my car, 01 clk430, when the on-board computer calls for it. Which is around every 10,000-12,000 miles. So far I have experienced no problems to the drivetrain. But this really depends on the driving condition. You don't want to change your oil every 10,000miles if you live in a badly polluted area or if you drive in stop & go traffic very often. Also, you can also check the oil yourself, and thats probably the best way to know when the car needs new oil.

My Mercedes oil turns black in the 1st few hundred miles. How does checking your oil tell you when to change it.?. I change mine at 5,000. i think it is over kill. 105,000 miles 1999 ML320. uses a quart at 4500.
