Hey guys my name is tom. I have been a Saab nut for the last 2 years. i CUrrently own my dream which is a 1989 Saab 900 turbo aero. I love the thing to pieces, the 900's are just too cool. Anyways, i need a second car so i can take my Saab off the road for periods of time for some small repairs (repains floorboards (surface rust) and send off the bumpers etc. to be refinished, i also need ot do a bunch of work in the dash, new cabin fan, lights, dash cracks. I want something different than another Saab. I love the old mercedes diesel. i hate japanese and american. SO what about a 240D? what should i look out for, what do i want? i want economical, diesel, and a mercedes benz. i found a 1981 240d, i don't want a turbo, i have a saab turbo, so if i want some performance MAN THAT THING IS ONE HELL OF A MACHINE! i want something that is slow, auto matic and good on gas, my saab is a 5speed, i want to relax and not worry about tickets, the Saab just wants to GO GO GO. So how are the auto trannys? how do i tell if its good? what do i look for in the engine, i have no experience with diesel, any help woudl be great, thanx.

first of all, dot freak out if a car smokes hard blueblack or white upon startup, this is normal. if the engine is healthy, the smoke should clear up in about 10 to 20 min, depending on how cold it is where you live, but once the engine is at operating temp. then it should be pretty clear at idle and crusing speed, with light to moderate smoke on hard acceleration. next, look at the engine. it should be pretty well coated in black grease, unless it was on a dealer lot or owned by a very anal person who cleaned the block and head all the time. third, it should be loud. especially on those older cars, a quiet diesel is an unhappy diesel. the healthy ones make noise. hope these couple tips helped. im sure others know more about these specific cars and can offer more help. ps. i have a 74 240d that im looking to get rid of. it is a 4spd with the 4 cylinder non turbo from an 83. the engine is currently out for clutch work, but i would re-install it if you were seriously interested in seeing/buying the car. i dont have a price on it yet, as i havent bought the clutch parts and the engine is out. it is in pretty good condition as far as these cars go. i can get you any pics you want. email me at ben_z84@yahoo.com if you are interested. i also have the complete original engine for parts if you want it, but it didnt run when i took it out.
