Status: offline He probably has an Electronic Parts Catalog like we have here at work. With the VIN input it narrows the search down A LOT. These cars just have so many options that the VIN really helps.

Status: offline If you go to a dealer they cannot even begin to help you unless you give them the VIN. This is really true with older cars from before 1980 when a mid-year change in a part was not abnormal. It is not enough to say it is a 1975 230 with a four cylinder gas. It is not even enough to say it is a 115.11512. Without the last few numbers, the chassis numbers, you might not get the right part.

As far as getting the VIN in order to make a key so you can steal the car: The VIN on US cars is visible through the windshield.
