hi everyone, im new to this forum, so heres a little background...

my mom had an 85 500SEL...drove it for 16 years and had 136,000 miles on it b4 she traded it in and got and infiniti I35 in 01 (no i have not forgiven her yet) im 23 years old and grew up in that car and loved it ever since i opened the door...i got into muscle cars and picked up my SS in '00...i graduated from st joes in 05 and ill be graduating UTI in october of this year...i love my SS and would like to have somethin else during the week to get me by...i find myself drifting back to my first love...good old 126 chassis... anyways....enough BS heres the question...

im lookin into buying an 82-85 300SD... would anyone be able to tell me the quirks of this car? major and minor? anything at all you guys can give me would be great....thanks alot!

(PS id be lookin for a car with about 250K on it...i know thats still pretty reasonable for a diesel but thats about all i know)

I think most people would agree with me that u would be more happy with a 300sdl 86 or 87. They were 6-cyl vs the 5-cyl and have an airbag and more power. Plus to me they look better cause of the different headlights. They are also are longer than the SD as i guess u know. They also have rear-headrests.

honestly as long as its a 126 body id go with it...only reason i would take an 85 would be cause of the nostalgia it holds for me...also i have looked a little bit and the 86 and 87's seem to be few and far between...

i know the 617's and 603's were both strong engines but im concerned about all the rest of the stuff that goes with it... thanks for the advice... so i guess we r gonna broaden the scope a bit... 126 body from 82-87... SD or SDL

The cars are tanks as long as the engines have not been over heated then other than minor electrical things that pop-up in all older cars there really isn't any problems.

I also forgot to mention the 1990-91 350sdl's though i have heard some problems with the oil pick up in the oil pan. A mechanic told me about it a few years back but there was suppose to be a fix according to him. Thats what he told me so not sure u might want to look into that if u find a 350sdl.

yeah i was thinkin about the W140 platform...but then i looked at the price and its outta my range...i think im gonna stick with the 126 platform and c what i can find...im gonna try and get something where ill have a buffer when somethin decides to go wrong...

Where do u live i am interested in selling my 300 sdl and there is one in my local paper for sale.

and btw the 90-91 is still the 126

hmm ok...i thought the 89 was the last year for the 126.....like i said im new...lol

i live in central jersey but im in PA (philly area) right now cause im goin to school...

im saving up to grab one in another couple months but i dont know much about diesels so im tryin to get a bead on what im gettin myself into...

yeah i was browsing ebay b4...stumbled across it...i wish i had the money id drive down there tomorow and get it...my best shot at grabbin one is gonna be march...sadly...
