I have a 1983 240d manual trans with 372000 miles on it and I get 29 to 31 mpg.  I just bought the car from a good friend.  I know she took very good care of  the car and kept the maintenance up.

Ive had a 1995 E300D 124 body non turbo 3L straight six that I bought in 2005 with 38000 org miles.

Slow as hell off the line but it did get an amazing 37MPG Hwy and about 26 city.   I calculate by filling and topping off fuel driving a min of 100 test miles then filling and topping again, seems to be the most accurate way.

Over last few test ive noticed a big drop in MPG.  Even larger than normal for winter.  My last run to PA only netted 26 MPG hwy.  i think its the fuel since prices hit $4.00 gal in NY.    My water indicators gone off 4 times due to NJ diesel purchased on the NY/NJ/PA border.  First year I also had problems starting

Anyone else notice a problem with the fuel lately ????

Once you have 10K miles of continuous accurate records you will find that 26 mpg hwy is good... nrk

I would have to agree that most things don't improve diesel milage.
I have found with my vw tdi  that  driving  consistantly with no jackrabbit starts or stops.
keeping the air intake path clean(snowscreen and airfilter) and adding powerservice
will keep my mpg consistantly around 43mpg(it's an auto tran).whether i drive city or highway.
powerservice will give me about a 3-4 mpg gain using about 6 oz per fillup(13 -16 gal)
If my mpg drops below 40 i will usually clean the snowscvreen and change the airfilter.
and it will go back to 43 mpg I have gotton 48 on occasion. I would think the same would apply
to a MB .
