I read where some say they get 30+ mpg on their 126 diesels. I have two, 84 300SD (dark blue, palomino, 163K) and 85 300SD (champagne, maroon, 193K) and both get around 25 MPG on highway cruising at 72-75 mph at 3000 rpm. Is something wrong? Where do I look to improve fuel mileage.

25 mpg is good for your 84 SD. The 87 300D gets between 28 and 30 mpg on average and I've gotten as high as 32 mpg. The SDL will usually run 2 miles less per gallon because they are bigger and heavier. 1990 and up for 300D may be even higher!

I just resently checked my mileage on the last two fill ups and got 27and 28 respectfully, in city driving and arount 70 on highway, occassionally 80. Prior to this I found a fuel leak at the inline filter just adjacent to the injector pump, was getting between 22 and 25 mpg.fixing the leak helped.

Speaking of mileage...

I have a 1981 240D, manual transmission (4cyl/4spd). It has ~240K miles on the odometer. I've had the car about 6 months; replaced glow plugs, valve seals, did a valve adjustment; did a compression test (400 psi/27.5 bar, 390 psi/26.5bar, 350 psi/24.5 bar, 410 psi/28.5 bar were the readings on all cylinders). When I bought the car it had recently had a rebuilt injection pump installed too.

I'm getting between 24 and 28 mpg. I was thinking I would be getting well over 30 mpg, especially with the 4 speed stick.

Is there anything to 'tune-up' the engine (injection pump timing, having injectors tested/rebuilt, etc) to improve the mileage?

The car seems to run fine (for a 4 cylinder that is... no jack rabbit!). It gets me around w/o any problems (with the block heater, it starts better than my '97 Ford Exploder in the winter).

Thanks,

Andy

I have an 87 190 turbo diesel. It's 2.5 L engine is the same thats in the 300Ds yet it is a fraction the size. Thats probaly why I get about 35mpg highway. To find your true fuel economy compared to gas cars, divide how many MPGs you get by the current proce of the cars fuel. So for my its 32 (average) divided by 2.57 (price for a gallon of diesel in MAss) and i get about 12.85. Whats Yours?

I just got back from afghanistan my 76 240 D (123 w/4speed) sat out and rusted some more,.
I was gone for over 6 months unbelievable but it started w/o jumping the battery and purred like i left it yesterday. Before I left i was getting consistently beter fuel milage and at the point when I parked it before deplying it was gettin 37 city driving, it will be interesting to see what it gets now,. When I first picked it up it had sat for 12 years, at first was only getting about 25 MPG it got better and better the more I ran it and got all the little tweaks worked out. The body is really rusty but the engine and drive train are great and it only shows 90something miles on the ticker, I thought about pulling the motor and puting it in a suzuki samurai but the motor wont fit.
It looks like all the taxis running around Iraq, afghanistan and other ME locations I have been, iam going to run it till the rear whells fall off which at the rate of decay should be pretty soon:)
