I'm ready to start looking at MB, but the only thing I know for sure is that I want a turbo diesel. The multitude of models is rather daunting for someone not yet familiar with them. I'm trying to be practical right now, as there is no particular car I've fallen for (yet); I have been snooping at 300D, 300SD, 300TD. I'm looking for solid highway transportation, very little city driving.
Is there a primer out there outlining the differences between various models. More specifically, I'd like to know, for instance, do certain models have a better mechanical reputation. Are there particular components on particular models that are problematic?
I'm looking to spend less than $10k, and less than $5k would be great, so I assume I'm looking at pre-1990 models.
If there is a FAQ I missed, please just let me know.
