I have a 87' 300d with 225,000. that just bit the dust. I had It towed to my local mech. shop, they said the engine threw a rod and locked up. They said my best bet would be to get a used engine.
They found an engine for around 2,000. and said with misc. parts and labor it would be around 3,800 to get it on the road again. I really don't want to spend that much on this car.
I need to step away from the the Mercedes world, because my financial situation has changed since Hurricane Katrina. I owned the car since 1999 and put over 10,000 in repairs, like a new AC system and many other reaips including having it painted, new grill and headlight asy to make it look like new. Now it's dead. I would some suggestions on how to sell this car and what to ask for it. Like I said, the body is in very good condition, the dash has a few cracks, but other than normal wear, the car is in good condition other than the motor.
Thanks in advance for any help. The car is located in Louisiana, about 50 miles north of New Orleans.

While I'm not sure what you are expecting to get for it, in spite of all the money you have invested in it, but I can tell you what I paid for my 87 300D almost four years ago. My car had made it to 223K before the head cracked. The previous owner had maintained the car through a Mercedes dealership and nothing up until the cracked head had ever been overlooked, in fact, it sported a new windshield because the original had been pitted from accumulation of 223K miles of driving! The car looked to be an 8, with the interior flawless and still looked and smelled like a new car!

The dealership cost to replace the head exceeded the car's book value, thus making it cost-prohibitive to repair. The car was sold at action for $1000 in 2001 to a mechanic who thought it might only have needed a head gasket...WRONG...he then placed an ad and listed it for $675.

After I bought the car, I had to pay $200 to ramp truck it home, I started my search for a good OM603 engine and found one with 167K out of a rear ended car in Toledo Ohio for $1650 shipped. I did the engine installation and got a good running car, now with over 260K.

87 300 D cars, 3 years ago, were on the market for up to about $5000, so looking at it that way, I got a good deal, but only because I did all the work, otherwise, my car's value before the engine transplant was worth only salvage value!

Hope this gives you some insight.........

I have an engine with 116K from an 87 190d turbo. its the 5 cyl 2.5 l turbo diesel engine. I can get it to you for short money (under $1000). you could craigslist the the job of swapping the engines in your area and get it done for prolly about $300. no offense, however you could probaly find some real low priced, qualified mechanical labor down there after hurricane katrina to do the job.

If you are interested, get back to me

my emial adress is duxdevil1@hotmail.com

thanks tr
