Continentals are popular to the masses because they are low-priced. M-B puts them on their cars because they have a contract with Continental. They offered the best deal, not necessarily the best tire. Grow up, fool.

I do also have Conti SportContact 2s and looking for something that would make the steering a little bit more lighter. Is there any suggestion you have?

I'm glad not everyone is as stupid as you. Of course MB get a deal on the tyres, but do you really think on a premium marque they'd be foolhardy enough to skimp on tyres for an £80k car? In every tyre test I've seen, Continentals come out mid to top table for all round performance. You can get better grip at the cost of wet weather performance and longevivty with Pirelli P-Zeros etc, but thats not what the post was about.

I see you're the latest dumb @ss to grace the forum. What would you do without your high schooler friends and your subscriptions to one or two car magazines that your mommy buys for you?

M-B doesn't even mention tire brands, moron. That's because they'll switch brands faster than you can make a further butthole of yourself, if the price is right. You imply they have some sort of loyalty to Continental tires and you call other people stupid? If you don't think M-B or any car manufacturer won't save money on tires when they get the opportunity and switch brands, then you're not only stupid, you're really stupid.

For every "test" that shows the Contis as the best tires in the world, I can show you two that don't. But so what? How useful are "tests" that put Contis on top, then in the middle, for all-around performance? Which is it, top or middle? You need to get a clue if you believe those magazines articles and advertisements about tires that are sponsored by tire manufacturers. You're too gullible to form a sensible opinion or to make an informed decision.

You're giving some really BAD tire advice. You're entitled to whatever opinion your puny little mind can muster, but that doesn't mean it's worth a crap. And, it's you who's skimping. You won't buy the best tires for your SL. What do you have on your SL? Skinny H-rated tires? No wonder your car won't handle any better than a Buick. Alas, I'm sure it's an operator problem and not a tire problem.

Why don't you take your lightweight and sophomorish ideas somewhere else? Somewhere where they'll be appreciated, like an AOL chatroom or your school cafeteria.

Personal attacks just show the depth of your intelligence into having a balanced argument.

Some facts - 245 45 17 Y Contact 2s are £150 - Kumhos £83. Sport Contact 2s are still currently standard fitment for most new Mercedes and Audis here in Europe. You can buy a better dry performance tyre, or a cheaper tyre but 'best' generally means one that does everything equally well.

You are the one giving bad advice - "go check cheap sale tyres out - oh but by the way I put 'supercar' tyres on mine because I have no idea what I'm doing". You can fit a spoiler to a shopping trolley but it will only make you look like a tit.

A few good websites just for information:

WTF guys, come on. Like Rodney says to the white folks "Can't we all just get along". I just asked a question about tires here. I bet if we were in a bar drinking a fine german beer with our Benzes park outside, we'd all have our opinions, but yet still respect each others different ideas. COME ON GUYS I'M BUYING THE FIRST ROUND!

I'll react to a personal attack whenever any idiot like you starts one with me. Or do you think calling me a fool didn't start the personal attacks in this thread? Don't start an attack then start crying like a boob about being attacked.

That's just great. You use an on-line tire store for your "best" tech info. They're just copying what sounds good from other sources so you'll buy their tires. You're an advertizers dream because you'll believe anything as long as it's reported with flowery language and it's what you want to hear. You truly are gullible.

Wow, that's an amazing fact. But price is a poor indicator of how a tire will perform and offers no technical info whatsoever. That's why one should buy tires on sale. Only a fool would insist on paying more for the same thing, claiming a higher price means a technically better tire.

You use Y-rated tires. Therefore, you skimp on tires.

No it doesn't. Best means the one that performs best or better in every category. Performing equally poor or equally average in every category doesn't make a "best" tire. Sorry, but Contis are not the best tire. Not the worst, which I never said, but not the best as you keep claiming.

According to your logic, any tire that costs twice as much as the Contis you bought should be twice as good. If the Contis you bought are the best, then what are the ones that costs twice as much? Are they bester? Are they twice as best? BTW, did you notice that Conti Contact 2 tires are on sale on that site? I guess you'd wait until the sale is over to buy them so you'll get the best Conti Contact 2 by paying more?

I'm shopping now for tires for my 98 SL. As we all know they're not cost effective, nor do they last as long as we'd like. Just wondering which tires you guys have liked or hated. Who had the best bang for the buck?
All opinions appreciated.
TIA,
E

You can go to www.tirerack.com and select the tire/tires you're interested in and read the reviews from people who've purchased them and used them.
It lists how many miles they have driven on the tires and has their opinions listed.

It may help in your decision.

I also have 1998 500SL sport and Used to have DUNLOP SP 9000 tires , but they are noisy and horrible for use. but handling was OK too stiff. so my recommendation is to stay away from it. Michalins XGTV are nice but very expensive to have cosing more then 2-300 a tire. I currently have PIRILLI P Zero NERO ( means black wall) they are excellent; excellent 4 season, handling and cost about 130-150 a tire at tire rack nicest thing about it is the how quiet tire is . give it a try you will like it better.
