Has anyone ever fixed a cracked dash board on their own? Were you happy with the results or is this sort of task better off left to a pro?
If you fixed a dash on your own, what did you do?

My advise to you is to have a specialist of vinyl repair access the cracks! Don't expect miracles for repair, but you may be surprised what they can do....

Just out of curiosity, what color is your dash....dark blue?

You guessed it! Dark Blue. Why? Does that color tend to crack more often or is it just a popular color?

Blue dashes semto be more pron to cracking than any other color. I don't know why, but that is what I have seen. The vinyl repair guys I have spoken to shy away from dash repairs larger than 1/2 inch or so because they expect that the repair will not last and / or not be pretty. For my '77 450 SL, I bought a used dash ( not blue ) from a cooler region of the US and dyed / painted it blue. It is impossible to tell that it is not original. If you decide to go this route, find a vinyl repair guy who is good and can dye it to match the color and the gloss level. That should give you long term satisfactory results.

So it's something about the blue! Thank you so much for all your advice. It's very helpful.

There are overlay dash panels sold by Performance Parts, and Adsit, that are installed over the original cracked dash... I bought one recently, (about 100.00 US), but haven't completed the install yet.. I've done a test fit, and it looks great! It installes over the upper part of the dash from windshield to the belt in center of dash. It is only about 1/16 inch thick.

Blue dash boards tends to crack more probably to the absorbance of heat.
