OK, I am a novice with my SLK but I have been changing oil for years in other cars. I tried to take the drain plug out and it broke one socket and the second one spin off and damaged the plug. Is this thing got a left hand thread on the plug or did the dealer over-tighten it last time (This is the first change since I came off free maintenance). I took it to a regular oil chenge place but they wouldn't touch it now that the plug is damaged. Any help out there?

You should siphon the oil out of the engine thru the dipstick, an approved method by Mercedes. I don't it since I got my C Class. Sounds like someone thightened the plug with a air gun. My plug is a right hand tread, I think? There are many siphon pumps on the market. I use the fluid extractor from Griot's. www/griotsgarage.com

As you are probably aware MB dealers do not remove the plug but siphon out the oil so its probably never been removed before. I had a similar problem on my 260 E it was really tight and the end was rounded off quite badly. I purchased a couple of new sump plugs and they are a really long thread so they are tight, definitely not LH thread. I hired a ramp so I could get good access to the plug its almost impossible to do it on your back or just with a trolley jack. Gave it a couple of good strikes on the end with a hammer and then using an old socket that was too small I hammered it on and then turned it and off she came. OK so it destroyed the socket but it was worth it. If this fails a cold chissel will usually loosen it and start it turning. ted UK Derby

Hello, I am new here.
I just came off of warrantee too.
Is there a comment somewhere on the oil change procedure in general. For example, where is the oil filter and how accessible is it. Is there anything peculiar about removing it (i.e. is in encased or is it under the "splash-plate"?).
I have the speedometer "wrench" reset instructions...I assume that is posted here somewhere or do you need it? If so it is here...this is a work in progress. speedomenter reset procedure

Welcome onboard. I have a "86" 300SL up here in Allentown. Why do you want to reset your speedometer?

Okay...so what is the difference between siphoning out the oil as MB does...opposed to just draining the oil? Does it really make a difference?

less mess more equipments (you will need air pressure and suction unit) less parts to remove more faster time less chance of leak on drain plugs you need not to touch them) more hi-tech?

I would never syphon oil from an engine that uses dino oil. Eventually, sludge buildup would cause problems that simple draining couldn't address. I'd say it's okay to syphon synthetic oil a handful of times between a thorough draining of the pan. MB dealerships syphon oil from engines because it's cheaper than draining, not because it's better.
