My wife's "new" 1982 240D has this annoying habit of not shutting down when you turn off the ignition. It doesn;t happen all the time, just every so often and with no predictable pattern. I have shown her the emergency stop lever on the fuel throttle linkage thing, but neither of us are confident that she will be able to manage it in an emergency like situation with our 2 year old in tow... A friend suggested that it is a fuel shutoff solenoid issue. How should I go about checking this out? Is it on top of the injection pump? Is it possible to "recondition" the existing solenoid, or will I have to throw down the $100 for the new one? Are there other possibilities? Thanks, Rich

It used to happend on occasion to my Wife's 84 300TD. It never happend to me, but once in a while it would happend to her. The problem turned out to be that occasionally she would not lower, or raise her door lock to its full up or down position. It was sort of stuck in the middle. This created a vacuum leak, and prevented the car from shutting down. Next time this happends, check the position of the door lock. Phil

It could be the shutoff solenoid causing the problems, mine was bad and I had to replace it. It could also be a vacuum leak. I would first start by checking all the vacuum hoses that you can find under the hood, mainly the ones that come out of the firewall to ensure none have been knocked loose. The best test to see if it is a vacuum leak would be to use a mighty vac to try to turn it off. If the mighty vac turns it off, then you have a bad solenoid. From what I have heard, the central locking system is seperate from the other vacuum systems in the car, but I could have just misread.

My 82 240D will not shut off unless I lock the drivers door. This is obviously due to a vacuum leak in the drivers door locking mechanism. It is also clear that the systems are not separate, at least insofar as they use a common vacuum tank and pump. Since yours is intermittent, and assuming it is not as previously described - failure to fully engage the lock mechanism - you may be seeing the beginnings of shutoff valve failure. But irst make certain your vacuum system is holding, because fixing a leak there is probably cheaper than replacing the shutoff valve. Particularly if that does not fix the problem.

If my previous suggestion did not work, and if it does turn out to be a vacuum leak, then the most common place for it to occur is near the driver's side door hinge, where he vacuum hoses pass from the interior to the driver's side door. That's where they break due to the stresses imposed by the numerous closing and openings of the door. Phil

wow seems mb parts are expensive in your country. The shut off valve here in the uk is less than £20 GBP.

Sometimes having the push button climate control or defrost on creates a leak. Try making sure the OFF button is pressed in (bottom button) before shutting the car down.

if your door locks not holding vac ..or not working ,right it could be robbing vac to that soure to shut it off ,,you need a hand held vac tester ,,its behind injection pumppand oil filter housing ..hook test to that vac port in shutoff start motor and see if it shuts off and hold vac,,,or booster line going to brk boosster if fitting could be plugged up not getting enough vac to tham claen out with drill bit ,,but dont drill out to far...
