I need some help in trouble shooting a "won't start problem". The car has 225K miles and has been very relaible until the other day when it refused to start. The glow plug light istopped coming on. I would think the car would still start given the weather here in N.C. is in the 70s. My wife said when it first failed to start a burst of black smoke came out of the tailpipe. Any help will be appreciated.

You need to check each glow plug. One plug will diactivate all system. Just check for resistance, 0 or infinity it is bad.

Also check, but preferably change, the glow-plug strip fuse. It OFTEN develops invisible cracks, rendering the whole glow-plug system inoperative.

The strip fuse is located in the glow-plug relay box.
