I am trying to replace alternator on 1983 300D and I cannot figure out how to get the old alternator out. I have removed bottom (pivot) bolt but cannot see how the top bolt (part of the tightening adjustment bolt) is supposed to come out. It almost looks like it is captive in there and is not made to come out. Can anyone tell me how to finish taking the alternator out? Thanks for any help on this.

I do not have either of the exact alternators shown in the two diagrams. My engine type is OM 617. The upper bolt on the alternator has a long adjustment screw attached to bolt head. That long adjustment screw is what prevents me from being able to remove the bolt. Should I take the whole bracket out with the alternator attached, then remove alternator from bracket?

126.120 300SD?

you just need to remove the adjustment screw first. just counterhold the other end.

you will only include that adjustment bracket if the screw is really difficult or loose threaded.

Do you mean that the adjustment screw can be removed from the upper alternator mounting bolt head? Does it unscrew from the bolt head or how is it removed? I don't want to break it by trying something I should not be doing.

The part that I cannot get out is # 206. There is an adjusting screw coming out of the head of # 206 which goes to # 197, the adjusting nut. The parts of # 182 that you can see just above # 221, some flanges, keep that adjusting screw which is part of # 206 captive and prevent the removal of # 206 from # 182.

okay, i get it.

* disconnect the wires from the back of alternator.
** loosen the nut 227
*** loosen the 197, move the alternator inward.
**** remove the belt from alternator pulley.
***** remove bolt 158 and 206 completely.

Good News!!! Everything you told me in last message was correct. But I had to remove bolt # 239 and take alternator and bracket out together as a unit. Then I could slide top mounting bolt, # 206 enough in the slot in bracket to remove locking nut, # 197. Then I was able to get it apart by removing nut # 227 and taking out bolt # 206. Only problem was that I forgot to completely tighten nut holding pulley on the alternator before I put the new alternator in. So I had to remove the new alternator to tighten that pulley. Now I have done it twice today, with your good help. The new one is in and working fine. As far as I can see the only way to do this is to take the alternator and bracket out together in order to replace the alternator. Mahalo!!! (Hawaiian for "Thank you") because your information enabled me to get it done. Thanks again!!
