How reliable are the early to late 80's MB diesels? I am considering buying
one for a daily driver. Also what kind of mileage can I expect and are there
any chronic problems with any perticular models so as to steer clear of them?

Generally in this time frame there were the 240 D, 123 body, four cylinder, non turbo, that are very reliable and will last and last given proper maintenance. They are however slow to accellerate and you really need to time it just right to get yourself on the freeway. The 300 D, same 123 body as above, also featured a 5 cylinder diesel that were either aspirated, or turbo charged. The aspirated version was a bit faster than the 4 cylinder but still lacked sufficiant on ramp, get up and go! The introduction of the turbo to the 5 cylinder added yet even more power giving the 300D enough power to make freeway speeds onto the freeways. Good power and deliver anywhere between 22 and 26 mpg approx. Also available was the big 300SD with the same 5 cylinder turbo.

These early 80's diesel MB's all were highly dependable, and reliable. No major issues mechanically with these cars, but did require periodic valve adjustments. Today, they are a good value for their resale. You can find them in very good to very rusted condition. Meaning that they are very subjectable to rust if you live in the snow belts generally. Prices range from $1000 to $5000. Find one that is rust free, well maintained and with service records. Milage is not neccessarily an issue if maintained. High milage would be in the 300K to 400K. There are many still available with under 200K and well maintained for under $3K

The next generation of MB diesels began in 1986 and 87 with the 124 (1987 only) and 126 (86-87)bodies, a 300SDL, and 300D, turbo charged in-line 6 cylinder engine that produced even greater power than the earlier 5 cylinder turbo and delivered greater fuel economy 28 to 32 mpg, were smoother and also much quieter too!

Because of California emmissions mandates, MB stopped importing all diesel cars to the US in 88 and 89.

The 86-87 300SDL, and 87 300D, did suffer some early design flaws with their engine emmissions components that threatened the good health of the engine. Trap oxidizers were redesigned, along with aluminum heads, that were prone to crack if overheated. These issues were resolved by MB, but there are still some 87 300D's and 300SDL's out there with original trap oxidizers installed. MB will replace these items, also the turbo charger, and entire exhaust system, free of cost, even if you are not the original owner, the offer remains to this day!

Generally, all of these cars are good values, depending only on condition of course. As mentioned, look for service records, milage is not a big deal if well maintained. I would not hesitate to by an MB diesel car with 250K if well maintained. All of the above can be found for under $5K in good condition, and many with low milage too!
