Hi,

I'm currently in the process of deciding whether to purchase a used Mercedes SLK 98/99 and am in two minds about doing so - I've heard they are generally pretty reliable but am thinking worst case scenario and wondered how much Mercedes might charge for new a gearbox, engine etc.

Has anybody had any serious and expensive problems and more generally, how much have people been paying for repairs? Just to get an idea. It's that or I buy a new car at the lower end of the market..Hmmm...

Any recommendations and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jay

Boy! Loaded questions if ever there were.

Are you looking at SLKs that are DOA and need engine and drivetrain replacements? If you're looking for a perfect car that will never need repairs, stop looking because there ain't no such thing.

Buy what you want to drive because whatever a shop or dealership charges you for repairs to any make of car will not make you jump up and down with joy-joy. Eventually, you'll need to repair any car you buy, no matter what model, no matter what year. Drive by any shop or service department. Ever see the mechanics sitting out on the front curb smoking cigarettes and drinking Cokes?

Plus, the more unique and exotic the car (territory for some SLKs) the more expensive the parts and repairs. I had to special order air filters for my SL. And, it uses two. Parts stores don't carry air filters or transmission filters for it. Even Jiffy Lube couldn't service it. When I went to a local MB dealership, the service manager said "We never see V12s here." Now that really exuded a bunch of confidence in me that the exalted MB dealership service was the place to take my cherished road rocket.

What would be your choice for a new "lower end" car? I mean, what are you comparing the SLK repair costs to? Also, used car warranties were invented for folks just like you. Make sure you can get one for the car you choose, if it's used. Maybe that's what you need instead of giving up an SLK for a Dodge Neon?
