Hi,
I have ML320 2000 the check engine light came on last night and the engine started shaking as if it's running on 4 or 5 cylinders.

My questions are,
1. Anyone experience this problem? what could be the cause?
2. How do I read the computer code and where do I translate it? In what manual?

Thanks for your help.

the fuel injector sometimes can cause this problem. if you stop and restart the engine and it's ok, then the control unit shuts off that faulty injector due to misfire.

if the problem remains after off and restarting the engine, then it can be the ignition coil, or injector.

if the problem is temperature related, then it can be the spark plug.

better check the fault code.

ok, for the everyday do-it-your-selfer that doesn't have a computer....is there a way to figure out what these codes are or just reset the light. My light came on and I did the 100,000 miles service and the light is still on. How can I reset it to go off???

it's just a bad fuel injector and the computer shuts off that injector because it might damage the catalyst.

cause is bad fuel, air inside the fuel rail, or defective fuel injector.

the control unit will re-activate the fuel injector after re-starting whenever the problem is no longer present. the fault code will be stored, but the check engine light will not show anymore.

no problem if the problem is not often.

Ok, so the lights been on for a week or so. Don't notice anything wrong with vehicle performance. Runs same as always. I replaced plugs, air filter, check the tightness of fuel cap, and have went thru a tank of gas....should I be concerned that the light is not off by this time or should I take it to the dealer and let them charge me big bucks just to read the codes and turn the light off? Not quite sure of what I should do, I don't want to damage anything.

so there is a chance that you also got a bad oxygen sensor as well in additional to the intermittent fuel injector problem.

if there is no more misfiring of the engine now, deleting the fault code is okay. it will not affect anything. it's just to inform you to have it checked.

on other models, unplugging the connectors from the engine control unit will do the trick. it will reset the memory. try it. if really not... then find a local workshop who got scanner. they can do it for you.

goodluck.

Some people have said that Autozone will read your codes for free. Might want to check that out if they're close by.

Or just pickup a code reader at the local autoparts store.

Shouldn't be too exensive

hope this helps,
TJ
