So I''ve had an ole 66 gas for years, a few months ago I decided I needed a good communter car and purchased a 1980 300sd. I drove it a few thousand miles, and it ran perfectly...my nephew showed up on my doorstep so I let him start driving it...one nice Sunday night he called me on the side of the road...it was very hot...it took me 30min to arrive, the gauge still read almost as hot as it gets, it of course didn''t crank, had no oil left in it etc, all of which was on the ground below the car. SO he swears he did not put gas in it. What happen to it?...do I need to find a new engine or is it just the head etc? any ideas?...It turns over freely...the car only has 170, 000 on it?

If the temp gauge was pinned and the crankcase was dry of oil the engine is probably toast, top and bottom.

Yep. Driving with no oil = dead engine.
