I was replacing a blown intake/exhaust gasket on my 83 240d and ran into problems. I''ve have the vacuum hose for the egr plugged with a golf tee for a while as i''ve seen recomd. but when removing the intake manifold the aluminum hose from the exhaust manifold to the egr valve got cracked. I''ve seen that people put a custom blocking plate between the intake mani and the valve but is it going to mess with anything by doing a similar blocking to the port on the ex. manifold and eliminate the egr valve completely.

also can injectors be cleaned or is replacing them the logical solution.

Nope on the EGR tube. It can be blocked without problems.

Take your injectors to a diesel injection shop and have them cleaned and pop tested. You only need to replace the ones that fail the pop test after cleaning. This should be done every 100k miles.
