All, I have enjoyed the benefits of being an S-Class owner for a number of years now. Soon I will be looking for a car for my daughter who has just earned her drivers license. I think the C class, Specfically the C280 would be a good first car for her. I have located a number of late 90''s models that can be bought for under 7K or so. Here''s my question: It appears that Mercedes went to a straight six to a V6 starting with the 1998 model. Which engine is more reliable? easier to maintain? provides the best economy? Also...anything to watch for when buying a 90''s C Class? Thanks to All. DAN

I would not even bother with a W202. For a little bit more you can buy an older E Class or a 2001 and newer C 240 or C320 that is built way better then any W202 in my opinion. I have the 2000 C280 Sport edition and I hate it a lot. its slow, cheap interior( interior peices breaks easy, high maintence. My S and E are cheaper to own/drive, and its also way way to small. The C240 and C320 are both a V6. Both motors are great if maintained properly.

With only 72,000 miles on it its not worth getting rid of it. I will drive it at least three more years. All I am saying is that it has not been good for me and was not worth it. Everyone will buy a car once in there life that they wont like. It was one of those impulse buying things. As far as getting rid of it. Not going to happin. Its a poor economy and cars are the last thing selling.

I have 230k miles on my 1995 C280 they all must not be bad, ;)

again. They are not all bad. Its just that it isnt the best they could of done with that car. After having an S and an E Class they just dont feel up to par. Still a strong car. I have heard many stories of people running W202 up to over 300k miles
