it''s in the owners manual to take down and put up manually. If you don''t have a manual, order one. it''s important for a multitude of reasons. it will get you started in getting to know your baby.

my manual says NOTHING about how to manually lower a top, only how to raise one. My mechanic and I BOTH looked in the manual. Maybe we''re OVERlooking something, but are you SURE about the lowering part?

Remove white plug in roof, use allen key in tool kit to unlock catches. Bazzle

I apologize, I just assumed it was like my SL and what goes up comes down too. Not so, after further examination of the SLK owners manual. I even tried using my SL wrench which has the same hex end but has more leverage, I tugged on it pretty good but was afraid to pull clockwise too hard as to cause some damage that wasn''''t there before. so I gave up. sorry about the misinformation. I have a subscription to alldata and it was no help either. good luck and when you figure it out for sure, could you please give us the lowdown.

Bazzle, have you actually tried to unlock a top with the hex wrench? I have tried and tried and finally stopped because I was afraid I would break something. I could get the wrench to budge little when going clockwise, but NOTHING counterclockwise. Brookings said he also tried, but, like me, he stopped for fear of damaging something. He also said he has acess to Alldata but it was no help. I know that there has to be a way to get the top unlatched because if I took it to a MB dealer they could do it. The hex wrench surely seems like the logical choice but since Brookings backed off I am not too eager to just try again.

Just wondering? Do you think that I should open the trunk as far as it will go before I bleed the hydraulic pump pressure in order to unlock the top? It would seem that the trunk needs to be in the far open position first in order to accomodate the top when it is released. Secondly, once the top is unlocked, how would you proceed? Attempt to remove the headliner in order to get to the switches, then take off the plastic bellows, then reattach/lock the top, close the hyraulic pump pressure, and reactivate the power button to see if the top then comes down????? Or....?????? Just trying to think through this as much as possible with the benefit of someone wiser than I in order to avoid problems... What do you think? Personally, I wouldn''t object to just raising and lowering the top manually from now on if it weren''t for the issue of rear quarter windows not coming up when top is up. Thanks, bmaxey

As I said Ive never done it in reverse and would be experimenting same as you. If you get to the point of removing the headliner I would replace the switches, the one in the windscreen surround too. Also remove rear C piller plastic panels and check the wiring where it goes across the hinges, it has been known to fray thru and go open circuit. You may be better off with fault finding by shorting out the cales to the switches away from the roof before you pull it to bits to prove the cct out. See this post. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r170-slk-class/1385774-roof-troubles-not-normal-things.html There is a LOT of roof info etc on that site. Please ask there:) Bazzle
